Pontiac Grand Prix A/C Compressor and Clutch

The compressor is considered the heart of the Grand Prix air conditioning system. The clutch is the part that turns the compressor on and off when needed. It is equipped with a friction plate near the compressor electromagnetic coil, and once the electromagnetic force is drawn toward the friction plate, it engages the pump motor.

Why is the clutch not engaging?

The compressor is the part that makes the entire unit work. When the clutch is depressed, the pulley will make the compressors clutch hub rotate. If there is an issue, there are a number of reasons why it may not engage. Here are the top reasons:

  • Low refrigerant: If the air conditioning in your Pontiac Grand Prix coupe is low on refrigerant, you will need to start the engine and carefully add it in. The radiator fans will change the refrigerant to liquid. It should start cooling immediately if this is the problem. Please note that lack of coolant is one of the main reasons why the clutch will not engage. It can cause long-term damage to the Grand Prix models air system and requires quick care.
  • Bad battery: If there is no battery voltage, this could mean that the coil terminals have loosened. Once pressure is lost, it will cause issues. Also check for loosened paint chips near the coils.
What are the symptoms that signify A/C clutch failure?
  • High cabin temperature: The Pontiacs interior is no longer cold when air blows. If the compressor is faulty, refrigerant will not help the air conditioner. This means the part has gone.
  • Loud noises: If you hear loud noises, such as knocking and squealing, in your Grand Prix interior, this is an indication that there are leaks due to worn out bearings and belts.
  • Compressor clutch is not moving: The clutch engages the pulley and allows it to engage and disengage. If it seizes, it cannot give power to the engine. In most cases, this means that repair is needed.
Do you need a removal tool for the A/C system?

If your Pontiac vehicle is in need of A/C repair, a removal tool can safely remove the part without causing damage to the engine or compressor. This Grand Prix model kit has a number of pieces and an instruction manual that can guide you safely through the process. The kit is also convenient and easy to carry.
