Valve Covers for Saturn

Saturn, a brand from General Motors that was founded in 1985, has many fans around the world. While production of the Saturn line ended back in 2009, owners of vehicles such as the Saturn S-Series will still need components like valve covers and gaskets replaced as their vehicles age. Understanding how valve covers for Saturn protect the working of your vehicle is important in determining which product to purchase.

What is a valve cover constructed from?

Most covers are made of aluminum, which is a good material because of its durability and lightweight construction. Aluminum is also a heat-resistant material, which is necessary considering the extremes of heat generated in the engine of your vehicle. The plugs that are bolted into the valve covers are made of aluminum as well.

Which part of the valve covers degrade first?

As a general rule, the main issue on most valve covers is with the gasket. This component is positioned at the contact point between the engine and the cover itself. This part of the valve covers is also designed to create an airtight seal so that oil doesn’t leak.

Unfortunately, over time, the intense heat output of the engine will cause the gasket, which is made of cork or rubber, to harden after about 20,000 miles. Your car’s engine covers depend on this component to provide a tight seal, and when the hardening happens, gaps tend to form.

What causes the black sludge that appears on the cover?

If you’re noticing black sludge on the valve covers of your car, this is a key indication that the gaskets underneath the covers are in need of replacement. This black sludge is leaked oil that’s accumulated on the body of your car’s parts. This oil can be somewhat problematic if it makes its way into the exhaust system.

What do you need to change the valve covers?

If you’ve noticed some excess oil forming around the parts of your Saturn or the covering has become damaged, it’s time to replace the valve covers and accessories for your vehicle. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A socket wrench with 10 millimeter sockets.
  • A flat head screwdriver or thin pry tool.
  • A microfiber cloth to clear away excess oil.
How do you remove the covers of a Saturn engine?

This process is simple. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. First, you’ll need to remove the spark plugs from the cylinders of the engine.
  2. Next, remove the PCV valve, which will be toward the top of most Saturn engines.
  3. Remove the side-mounted vacuum line with your hands.
  4. Using a socket wrench, remove the 11 bolts that surround the cover.
  5. Use the pry tool or screwdriver to pull the cover off of the engine. Afterward, make sure to use the cloth to clean the parts.
