Ford Aerostar Complete Engines

The Ford Company introduced the Aerostar in 1986 as one of the first examples of a minivan in the United States, and it continued to manufacture this vehicle all the way through 1997. Because this was a single-generation vehicle, the design did not change throughout the 11 years that it was in production; however, the engines did evolve over time to become more powerful.

What engines are available on the Aerostar?

While the Aerostar was being manufactured, the Ford Company offered a variety of engines that came with it:

  • 2.3-liter four-cylinder - This particular motor was available in the 1986 and 1987 models and came with 100 horsepower at the time.
  • 3.0-liter V6 - This V6 engine variation was available the entire time the Aerostar was in production, from 1986 through 1997, and it powered the vehicle at 140 horsepower.
  • 4.0-liter V6 - This was an upgraded 4.0 liter V6 engine that was offered from 1990 through 1997 and offered 160 horsepower as well.
How do you know it is time to replace your engine?

If you are still using the original engine that was in your Ford Aerostar and have had it for a long time, it may be a good idea to replace it and provide your vehicle with a renewed life span. Any of the factory-installed engines would be more than two decades old at this point, and over time, the performance of any engine will start to suffer. It is possible that your Ford Aerostar has over 200,000 miles on the engine, which would cause maintenance to likely become an issue. When this point comes, it is typically better to install a rebuilt or new engine in your Ford Aerostar vehicle.

It may also be a good idea to put in a replacement engine if you want to upgrade the performance of your vehicle. For example, if you currently have a 1990 Ford Aerostar that is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, you might want to trade it in for a compatible 4.0-liter model for some more power in the car. It will improve the drive significantly, while also adding years to the car itself.

Should you purchase a Ford engine whole or in parts?

Whether you want to purchase the engine as a whole or just in a few different parts will likely depend on what condition your current engine is in. If your Ford Aerostar is drivable at this point except for a mere faulty cylinder block, it may not be necessary to invest in a whole engine. However, if the engine has a litany of issues or is clearly showing signs of age, it might be a better idea to buy a whole new engine for your Ford Aerostar.
