Ford Freestar Complete Engines

The Ford Freestar minivan was produced from 2004 to 2007. It was a third-generation model, preceded by the Aerostar and Windstar. It continued Fords record of building cars that could haul both passengers and cargo by including a standard Essex V6 engine. Engines from the Ford Freestar will also fit other cars, including its badge-engineered twin, the Mercury Monterey.

All models of the Ford Freestar, including the SE, Sport, SEL, and Limited models, came standard with 193 horsepower 3.9-liter V6 engines for all years in which the Freestar was in production. A 4.2-liter V6 engine with 201 horsepower was also available as an option on all models. This powertrain included a four-speed automatic transmission with both the 3.9-liter and the 4.2-liter vehicles.

All Freestars came standard with an Essex V6 engine. The Essex V6 is a pushrod motor that has two overhead valves per cylinder. It is designed to fit a four-speed automatic transmission. The Essex V6 was initially introduced in 1981 in several different cars. The 3.9-liter version of the motor debuted in 2004. This version of the Essex motor had a slightly longer stroke than its 3.8-liter predecessor.

The 4.2-liter version of the motor has been in production since 1997. These are pushrod, or overhead valve, motors with iron blocks and aluminum heads. They have an overhead valve configuration in which the valves are located on top of the cylinder head. The camshaft is located inside the engine block. This powertrain configuration allows for the motor to easily fit in a more compact space. These engines are meant for the minivan vehicle style, in which the hood is short and the engine compartment is small. This configuration also makes servicing easier and simplifies the drive system.

When the Freestar replaced the Windstar, Ford debuted a new powertrain lineup along with it, so motors from the Freestar are not carried over from older Ford minivans. The standard Ford Freestar 3.9-liter Essex V6 with four-speed automatic transmission was also standard on the contemporary Ford Mustang, so motors from the Freestar will also fit into Mustangs. The optional 4.2-liter Essex V6 was also available on other vehicles, including the identical Mercury Monterey, the Ford E-Series vans, and the F-Series pickups.
