Complete Engines for Mercury Capri

Replacing complete powertrains in cars requires various approaches for different years and models of a given make. It can help to have a repair manual on hand to understand the proper steps to take and avoid common mistakes. A complete powertrain includes the fuel system, ignition system, plugs, wires, and the water and fuel pumps in addition to the base unit itself.

How many different engines are available?

For the second-generation 1979 to 1986 Mercury Capri models alone, engine options include the 2.3 L I4, 2.3 L turbo I4, 2.8 L V6, 3.3 L I6, 3.8 L V6, 4.2 L V8, and 5.0 L V8. As long as it is mounted properly, you can fit any number of power-plants in a rear-wheel drive Mercury Capri. Because it was built to house a Ford 5.0 L V8, there is plenty of room in the bay.

The 1991 to 1994 front-wheel drive XR2s were designed to hold a much smaller 1.6 L turbo. While most Ford power-plants can fit in a Mercury Capri with the exception of the XR2, the Ford 5.0 L V8, also standard on the Mustang GT at the time, is a workable replacement choice for the Mercury.

What about powerplants for special editions?

American Sunroof Corporation converted 1984 to 1986 Capris into enhanced hatchbacks coupes and convertibles. The Mercury coupes had the Ford Motorsport B303 camshaft, which created more power than the standard 5.0 motors. The Mercury convertibles were an involved project. These conversions required redesigning the cars unit construction and the fabrication of a replacement rear-deck lid and tonneau cover to protect the convertibles rear-seat passengers from the elements.

Are there different ways to replace a Mercury Capri motor?

Four different replacement options are available for a Capri.

  1. You can pull a working used power-plant out of a vehicle that has had an unrelated mechanical issue if it is possible to find one. Simply pull the power-plant out of the old vehicle, drop into the 300M, and hook it up. Many different used cars have power-plants that will fit in a Capri. The user will need to make sure whatever engine is chosen is properly mounted.
  2. Rebuilding a power-plant involves disassembling it, cleaning it, and putting it back together with any parts that need to be replaced. With a rebuild, the repair is done up to the level of the original problem.
  3. A re-manufactured Capri power-plant has been restored to its original factory condition. The cylinders are machined along with all other metal parts to meet manufacturer specifications. Because they are brand new replicas of the original power-plant, re-manufactured replacements come with comprehensive warranties.
  4. An all-new, or crate motor, is also an option for a vehicle.
