Crystal Chandeliers

The name chandelier comes from a Latin word that means “to glow.” Crystal chandeliers not only glow, but they give any room an elegance that few other lighting fixtures can impart. This is true whether they are a tiny, shabby-chic fixture in a hallway or a grand glittering centerpiece in a palace ballroom.

What kind of crystal chandeliers are available?

You can choose from:

  • Traditional:These have multiple arms, with each arm having a light. They often have crystals in the shape of teardrops, pendaloques, crystal ball finials, bobeches, beads, or balls. Traditional crystal chandeliers include Empire chandeliers with long ropes of crystals attached to a crystal-studded bowl, the many-armed Maria Teresa style, Victorian, and Venetian chandeliers.
  • Modern and Contemporary:. Modern and contemporary crystal chandeliers take advantage of unusual materials such as frosted glass or otherwise use traditional materials in unusual ways. They often have uncommon shapes, such as masses of crystal balls wound into a spiral. They take advantage of modern lighting such as LED and halogen lamps.
  • Transitional: This crystal chandelier bridges the gap between what is traditional and what is modern or contemporary. It also sparkles with crystals, but it might enclose them in a wrought-iron birdcage. These chandeliers might be rectangular, drum-shaped, shaped like the symbol of infinity, or made in the shape of a snow burst or inverted wine glass. They may be flush with the ceiling or have multiple tiers without arms. They may use black instead of clear crystals or sport darker metals insteaad of shiny bronze or brass.
  • Cottage. These crystal chandeliers are like the others but a bit smaller. They are excellent for hallways and girls’ bedrooms.
What materials are used to make crystal chandeliers?

  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Chrome
  • Stainless steel
  • Murano glass
  • Copper
  • Fabric for shades, including silk and organza.
  • Polished nickel
  • Black wrought iron
Are there any accessories for the crystal chandelier?

Crystal chandelier accessories include:

  • Cleaner
  • Extra crystals
How do you hang a chandelier?

If you have an 8-foot ceiling, you should hang your chandelier about 30 inches above your dining room table. Add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height. In any other room, your chandelier should have at least a few inches of clearance for the top of the head of the tallest person in your household.

How do you clean a chandelier?

Place old newspapers under the chandelier, turn off the power at the circuit box, and let the chandelier cool off if it was on. Dampen a cloth with chandelier cleaner, then take out the light bulbs, clean them, and polish the crystals. Let the excess cleaner drip down to the newspaper. Move around the chandelier to clean it instead of turning it.
