Mini DisplayPort Female Cables for High Resolution Displays

Mini DisplayPort (also called MiniDP or mDP) is an audio-visual interface that has been in use in computers and electronics since 2008. The first implementation of the interface can drive displays with a resolution as high as 2560 by 1600, while the 2018 implementation can transmit 8K signals. Mini DisplayPort female cables allow users to connect to displays that use different interfaces.

What Types of Mini DisplayPort Cables Are Available?

Mini DisplayPort uses the same standards as the larger DisplayPort interface. Therefore, like DisplayPort, users can connect adapters to use monitors that may not have a Mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort interface. The Mini DisplayPort output interface on devices is the female end. Extender or adapter cables have a Mini DisplayPort male connector on one end, but have a female port on the other to accept other cables.

  • Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Extenders:This type of cable connects to an output port and terminates in a female Mini DisplayPort, effectively extending the output port.
  • Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort: This cable may be one of three types. The first type has a male MiniDP terminal on one end, and a female DisplayPort on the other. This DisplayPort adapter allows users to connect a device with MiniDP port to a DisplayPort cable. The other type has a male DisplayPort terminal and a female MiniDP port on the other side, connecting a DisplayPort device to a MiniDP cable. Lastly a cable with a male MiniDP terminal and a male DisplayPort terminal connects a device directly to a monitor.
  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI: This type of female adapter allows users to connect a Mini DisplayPort device to a DVI display. While MiniDP transmits both video and audio, it is important to note that DVI only works with video. Therefore, these adapters do not transmit audio. In addition, users should ensure they get the correct DVI adapter (DVI-I or DVI-D) that they need for their display.
  • Mini DisplayPort to HDMI: This type of HDMI adapter allows users to connect a MiniDP output to an HDMI cable. Since both types of interfaces carry audio and sound, users do not need to connect a separate audio cable.
  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA: VGA is one of the oldest types of video connections and carries an analog signal.

What Mini DisplayPort Cable Should You Get?

Modern high-resolution displays can benefit from the bandwidth and features Mini DisplayPort offers.

  • Certification: DisplayPort certified cables have passed the certification test and should provide quality video.
  • Compatibility With Future MiniDP Updates: While the capabilities of MiniDP are updated regularly, adding new features and improvements, the cable remains the same. New cables are backwards compatible with older MiniDP outputs and inputs, and they are future compatible as well.
