SEGA Lord of the Rings Collectible Card Games

The Lord of the Rings Fantasy Flight Collectible Card Games are a series of Fantasy Flight Living Games that are based on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This card game was originally released by Decipher, Inc. in November of 2001 to coincide with the first of the three movies produced by Peter Jackson and released by New Line Cinemas. In addition to the many images lifted from the films themselves, some of the cards come with artwork that depicts characters and items that were in the books but did not make it into the Lord of the Rings films.

How are the Living Game cards packaged?

The decks of game cards were originally sold in 11-player individual booster packs. These card games contained a rare card, seven common allies, and three uncommon allies. One out of six individual game packs created included a foiled version of one random player piece in the set. Every game deck also comes with:

  • Two starter player decks comprised of 63 allies cards that come with two copies of one promotional piece
  • 60 fixed common and uncommon cards
  • Three random rare player cards that offer unique powers when playing the games
Are there any expansion sets?

There were two expansion sets that corresponded with the second and third entries in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. A third expansion set was called Reflections. This was released between the second and third movies and Fantasy Flight sets. It came with 52 new cards in the deck. All of these were foiled, and half of them were considered half-rare and rare-plus. These new cards included material out of each of the three films in the movie series as well as specially produced material for the cards. The Reflection booster sets came with three new cards as well as 16 repackaged random cards out of each of the first six sets. A single old card always came in a language besides English.

Are new card sets still being produced?

As of 2007, Decipher, Inc ceased producing new series of The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game. Nevertheless, this card game is still playable among fans with the necessary cards. Due to the significant Lord of the Rings following, many issues of the card game were released to the public and are still in circulation today. An online card database exists that contains information about the cards.
