Durable Serial RS-232 Female Cables Ensure Long-Lasting Connections

RS-232, or Recommended Standard 232, was commonly used prior to today’s USB connections. These female cables link two computer-related devices that use the serial RS-232 standard to communicate with each other. The cables use RS-232 serial ports to connect to a variety of peripheral devices including printers, storage, power supplies, and others.

When should serial RS-232 female cables be used?

This cable is used whenever two DB9 serial devices with male ends need a connection or to extend an existing connection. Both ends of the female cable must have the same number and alignment of connections as its DB9 male counterparts on the source and receiving devices. This can be verified visually or through reading about device cable requirements. You also need to determine your cable length, so you buy the right length of cable for your project.

Why use RS-232 female cables?
  • Consumer legacy and other equipment: Since many legacy home PC and industrial computer systems were developed using DB9 type serial ports over several decades, some of this equipment is still in use and requires this type of cable to connect the main computer to an external monitor and to other peripherals. Hobby computer builders alternatively use this type of port and connector for low-speed serial communications from their main computers to specialty devices.
  • Simplicity: These cables are more durable than their USB counterparts and work well if the connection does not require high speeds. Although most PCs no longer come with the type of communication port necessary for this cable, converters or special cards are readily available in the marketplace.
  • Specialty communications: These cables sometimes link industrial computer servers directly to embedded systems (e.g., routers) for monitoring when monitors, keyboards, or operating systems are not yet installed. Sometimes a null modem cable is used when cross linking is required between modems.
  • Compatibility with embedded systems: Several types of servo drives, numerical control equipment, programmable logic controllers, variable-frequency drives, and other lower-level devices are programmed using the serial RS-232 communication type, and these cables provide a link from an interface to the device.
  • Length: RS-232 cables are manufactured in lengths of up to 15 feet.
How do you care for an RS-232 female cable?

There are several things you can do to make your cable last. Serial cables contain several separate connectors with wires that run individually inside the main cable. It is important not to fold or to make a crease anywhere along the length of the cable because that could split one of several internal wires and cause it to be unusable. When unplugging either end of the cable from a device, it is important to pull it using the protected end and not along the length of the cable. Otherwise, doing so may disconnect the wires in the cable from the connectors at either end.
